Where did you grow up?

I was born in San Angelo Texas, while my father was in the Air Force.  After that we moved to Marion Iowa, where I spent most of my childhood.

Where did you go to school?

I did my undergraduate work at the University of Northern Iowa, where I was graduated with a double major; BA Marketing; BA Spanish.  I then received my Master of Business administration from Eastern Illinois University.  I received my training for the ministry at the Kansas City Baptist Temple, graduating from the Shepherd’s School of Ministry in 1995.

Tell me about your family.

I am married and have two adult children. My wife, Kathy and I met in college and have been married for over 37 years. We have two adult children both of whom are married. Jonathan lives in Hawaii with his wife Laura, and daughter Gabriel. Christopher and his wife Sarah live in the Kansas City area.

When did you become a Christian?

My wife and I both received Christ as our savior in 1983. Having been raised in church, both of us had a concept of who Jesus was, and the gospel story, but neither of us had ever been born again. Through an incredible set of circumstances, someone witnessed to each of us while we were at work, even though we worked 75 miles apart. That evening, we talked about our experiences at work, and we knelt together and asked God to save us. From that day on, our lives have never been the same.

In a sentence or two describe your primary responsibilities at Grace?

I have a passion for preaching the word of God and love doing counseling, so my primary primary responsibilities include preaching and teaching, family counseling, and church leadership.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

That’s a tough one, I have had some great mentors in life. But I guess all the advice I have heard can be summed up in two words given to me by my friend Mel Sabaka, “Do Right”.

What is your favorite passage in the Bible?

1 Corinthians 6:20  “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.  This is my personal life verse and reminds me of God’s love for me, and my responsibility back to Him.

What is your favorite book besides the Bible?

I enjoy reading anything from Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, Lee Childs & Vince Flynn.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy working out, especially riding bicycles.

What is your favorite movie?

If I had to pick just one movie…”Hildago”. I always enjoy the story of an underdog triumphing over seemingly insurmountable odds.

When did you become a Christian?

I was raised in the Lutheran church and knew a lot of facts about God and Jesus but did not know Him personally.  After going through some difficult times in college, I began a prolonged search for life’s meaning and eventually became a Christian in August of 1988.  Jesus was no longer a historical figure but my personal Lord and Savior.  My life hasn’t been the same since.

In a sentence or two describe your primary responsibilities at Grace?

My primary responsibility is working with the College and Career group at the church, as well as, overseeing the praise and worship at Grace.

What is your favorite passage in the Bible?

Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

What is your favorite book besides the Bible?

Watch my kids in whatever they are doing – orchestra, soccer, basketball, etc.  Read. Watch movies. Workout.  Work in my yard.

What is your favorite movie?
